The New BMW 5 Series Touring | Part Eight (2004)

iDrive control system with voice entry: The 5 Series Touring obeys all your commands

Inside the new 5 Series Touring, the driver and his passengers will immediately enjoy a clearly designed, neat and tidy cockpit. And like the 5 Series Saloon, the new 5 Series Touring comes with BMW’s trendsetting iDrive control keeping the number of switches and control units to the essential minimum in the interest of superior clarity. The Controller, a handy rotating and press control knob on the centre console, offers the driver a wide range of comfort and infotainment functions, the menu and the information required being presented on the Control Display, a large 6.5-inch colour monitor fitted as standard exactly in the driver’s and front passenger’s line of vision in the middle of the dashboard.

Yet a further special feature of the new BMW 5 Series Touring is that it literally follows the driver’s commands in every respect, BMW’s innovative, enhanced voice entry system coming in combination with DVD Professional navigation control (complete with presentation of maps) fitted as an option. This allows the driver to mastermind all essential iDrive comfort functions, the audio systems, telephone and navigation system together with the entry of destination points, etc, by simple and straightforward voice messages and without taking his eyes off the road.

BMW’s Online Portal comprising numerous services from the stock exchange through a hotel and restaurant guide all the way to a parking information service covering approximately 2,500 car parks is also available as an option in the new 5 Series Touring. Operating with maximum efficiency, the system feeds all addresses directly into the navigation unit.

Active Cruise Control: Cruising along in grand style

The new BMW 5 Series Touring comes not only with highly efficient and much simpler control systems, but also with innovative driver assistance making things even easier for the man or woman at the wheel of the new model. ACC Active Cruise Control, for example, available as an option, uses radar to permanently measure the distance to the vehicle ahead, registering your current speed and calculating the right distance then automatically maintained by the system in the interest of extra convenience.

The new 5 Series Touring thus adjusts smoothly and harmoniously to the flow of traffic, without the driver even having to touch the gas or brake pedal. Indeed, never before has the process of cruising along in dense traffic or driving in a convoy at constantly changing speeds been as convenient and pleasant as with ACC. And indirectly at least ACC also means extra safety on the road, simply because the motorist able to relax at the wheel will remain fit and alert, concentrating more closely on traffic conditions around him or, of course, around her.
