The New BMW 5 Series Touring
Published: 4th April 2004
Six-speed transmission featured as standard
All models in the Touring range come as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox. Six-speed automatic with Steptronic comes as an option, and the 525i and 545i Touring are also available as an alternative with BMW’s sporting six-speed SMG gearbox enabling the driver to shift gears via paddles on the steering wheel like in motorsport.
All-aluminium chassis with self-levelling
Like the 5 Series Saloon, the new Touring features an all-aluminium chassis specially developed for the estate version, the integral arm rear axle keeping the floor of the luggage compartment flat and smooth and maximising the loading width available.
All Tourings come as standard with automatic self-levelling featuring air springs on the rear axle. The result is a superior standard of consistent motoring comfort regardless of the load you are carrying in your car. Traction and driving dynamics, in turn, benefit additionally from the appropriate rear axle load of just over 50 per cent.
DSC Dynamic Stability Control with its additional DTC Dynamic Traction Control, DBC Dynamic Brake Control and CBC Cornering Brake Control functions round off the high standard of active safety offered by the 5 Series’ chassis and suspension. Light-alloy wheels measuring either 16 or 17 (545i) inches and running on 225/55 R 16 or, respectively, 225/50 R 17 (545i) tyres come as standard, light-alloy wheels in runflat technology with tyres measuring up to 245/40 R 18 are available as an option straight from the factory.
The outstanding qualities of the carefully balanced Touring suspension can be further enhanced only by innovative systems such as Active Steering and BMW’s Dynamic Drive anti-sway control. And even firmer, more sporting suspension set-up lowering the entire vehicle is also available for the sports-minded driver.
Dynamic Drive: superior handling without body roll
Fitted as an option with Dynamic Drive, the 5 Series Touring boasts active anti-sway control responding within fractions of a second to the respective situation on the road: Dynamic Drive varies the distribution and magnitude of anti-sway control according to individual requirements, using hydraulically adjustable anti-roll bars front and rear.
On the road, anti-sway control guarantees a superior and safe feeling, ensuring that the car consistently hugs the road and combining the superior comfort of a luxury saloon with the equally superior handling of a sports car. And this, in practice, means twice the usual driving pleasure, combining extra dynamism with additional comfort.
