- The original Audi A3 made its debut in three-door form in 1996, the five-door joining the range in 1999
- It was powered by spark ignition petrol and TDI engines ranging from 90PS to 180PS, with a 210PS, and later 225PS, unit reserved for the S3 quattro
- The original A3 found almost 875,000 homes Worldwide
- The new Audi A3 features a wheel base which has been increased by 65mm compared with the outgoing model, extending the interior length by 55mm. It is also 30mm wider and 10mm lower
- The result is 42mm more shoulder room at the front, 30mm at the rear, and 29mm more rear knee room
- The luggage compartment provides a capacity of 350 litres with the rear-seat backrest in place and up to 1100 litres with the backrest tilted down
- Inside, the cabin has been completely redesigned to be even more ergonomic and functional, helped by optimally positioned gear lever and accelerator pedal and a lower seating position which ensures that head room is virtually unchanged despite the lower body
- Steering wheel height adjustment range has been increased by 20 per cent, and reach by 5 per cent
- The cabin is also built to even higher standards and with even more attention to style, exemplified by the aluminium fringed round air vents, the rotary knobs and the struts between transmission tunnel and centre console, all of which are reminiscent of the Audi TT
- Front seats are available with four-way electrically adjustable lumbar support, and feature an ‘easy-entry’ function to facilitate access to the rear seat
- Seat heating is available as a new option for the rear seat
- The Z-shaped handbrake lever mechanism helps maximise space, liberating enough on the centre console for two additional cupholders which are also easily accessible from the rear seats
- A sunblind extending over the rear window (standard for Sport models) can be integrated in the luggage cover to aid security and keep out excessive heat
