Costing £ 77,900 the new Audi S8 is powered by a new V8 4.0 litre bi-turbo petrol engine which produces 520PS and delivers 650Nm worth of torque from 1700RPM. This means 0-62 mph in 4.2 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.
According to Audi you should see 28 mpg on the combined cycle with a CO2 emissions output figure of 235 g/km. This is an improvement on the outgoing S8 which was powered by a 5.2 litre V10 despite the extra 70PS output.
The Audi S8’s V8 engine is mated to an eight-speed tiptronic gearbox which is designed to uses tall gears at low revs whenever possible to save fuel, but downshifts quickly on-demand to provide full power. The tiptronic gearbox sends power to a quattro drivetrain combining a self-locking centre differential with the sport differential on the rear axle. During dynamic driving, the lion’s share of the power flows to the outside wheel to literally pushing the S8 through the corner.
The Audi S8’s drive select dynamics system controls the throttle pedal response, the shift points of the S tronic transmission, the servo boost of the electromechanical steering, the characteristics of the adaptive air suspension and the sport differential. It can be set by the driver to control how the S8 behaves by choosing between the five modes comfort, auto, dynamic, individual and efficiency.
The Audi S8‘s body is made from light weight aluminium with only the ‘B-pillars’ being made out of ultra high-strength steel. This means that despite the size of S8 it only weighs only 1,975 kilograms. There is a choice of 13 paint shades, two of which – Daytona Grey and Prism Silver – are reserved for the S8.
On the inside there is double glazing – and Audi’s MMI navigation plus is standard with a high-resolution 8-inch display. It even allows you to connect to the internet via suitable mobile devices and provide WLAN connectivity for occupants of the S8.
The Audi S8 costs £ 77,900 in the UK and will be available to order in May with first deliveries expected in July 2012.Published 24 April 2012
