The all-new Audi A3 will be priced from circa £19,000 with first UK deliveries for the three-door model expected in September 2012.
Initially the new Audi A3 will be available with one 2.0-litre TDI (143PS) (diesel) and two 1.4 TFSI (122PS / 54.3mpg / 120 g/km) and 1.8 TFSI (180PS / 50.4mpg / 130 g/km) petrol engines. All of these turbo charged units have been ‘downsized’ to lower fuel consumption (averaging a 12% gain over the outgoing model) and improve overall efficiency.
The 1.8-litre TFSI is linked as standard to a seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch transmission; the 1.4-litre TFSI and 2.0-litre TDI are paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. All engines in this first phase drive the front wheels; quattro permanent all-wheel drive – and further engines, including a 1.4-litre TFSI with innovative cylinder on demand technology – will follow later in 2012.
When launched a 1.6-litre TDI engine will see CO2 emissions dip below the magical 100 g/km with Audi reporting 74.3mpg / 99 g/km.
The new Audi A3 is virtually identical to its predecessor in length and height at 4,237mm and 1,421mm respectively. It is slightly wider at 1,777mm and has a longer 2,601mm wheelbase which means more interior space; the load capacity is 365 litres.
High spec models will have xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lamps and tail lights. Later full LED headlights will also be available, the first in the compact car segment.
The new A3 can be specified with the Bang & Olufsen audio system, MMI navigation plus and mobile phone preparation with online services, which brings new ‘real time’ online traffic information and, through a WLAN hotspot, gives passengers access to the Internet while travelling.
