Underneath, the front spoiler houses the foglights, and its air intakes are shielded by a black honeycomb mesh.

At the rear, the light clusters have been reshaped to harmonise with the new headlamps, and are heavily underscored to increase their prominence. The bumper section on both 156 and Sportwagon models is deeper, with the numberplate located further down, within a recessed moulding. On the 156 saloon, the position of the Alfa Romeo badge has been lowered beneath a new highlight line emphasising the volume of the boot.

Further to last year's extensive interior revisions, the new models offer a larger, easier to view, multifunction display in the centre of the dashboard. Leather upholstery is standard on Lusso versions with coordinating fascia colour.

Revised Model Range

Within a restructured, simplified model range, a new, entry level Alfa Romeo 156 saloon becomes available with a choice of either 1.6 litre Twin Spark or 1.9 litre, 115 bhp JTD turbodiesel engines. These new models fit into the range below Turismo specification versions and are badged simply 1.6 T.Spark and JTD respectively.

Four specification levels – entry level, Turismo, Veloce and Lusso – offer generous standard equipment throughout the range. Key equipment includes:
