Alfa Romeo 156 GTA

  • Alfa Romeo takes ETCC manufacturers’ title with Alfa 156 GTA
  • Fabrizio Giovanardi takes drivers’ title in his Alfa 156 GTA
  • Alfa beats BMW and Volvo for the second year to secure double title win
Alfa Romeo took an unassailable lead in the FIA European Touring Car Championship last weekend at Donington Park, the penultimate round of the series.

"Our target was to win both the drivers’ and manufacturers’ championships," says Mario Sipsz, Alfa Romeo’s team manager. I am very happy for Alfa Romeo. It has been a hard season and I think we could have won the titles earlier, with more luck on our side. We have now won the two championships for two consecutive years, and next year we will try and win them again!"

With one round to go, Giovanardi has 112 points, having won eight of the 18 races so far this season. In second place is his Alfa Romeo team mate, Nicola Larini, with 85 points, who will have to battle to the end of the season to hold off BMW’s Jorg Muller who is in third place.

In the manufacturers’ title race, Alfa Romeo has amassed a convincing 206 points, ahead of BMW with 169 points and Volvo with 53 points.

The final round of the season takes place at Estoril in Portugal on 20 October.
